Get a deal on headshots when you refer people

April 2, 2009 | 0 comments

I’ve wasted a lot of money advertising this business. I once spent a thousand bucks putting a half page colour ad in the ACTRA newsletter, advertised in student handbooks, and even done seven foot tall graffiti-style pasteups around the city in an effort to get people thinking a little more critically about their headshots.

If you’re a returning client, 10 referrals would mean $150 off the regular session price with the returning client discount

You know what I got for my efforts? Tire kickers, models wanting free portfolio work, and angry skeptics. If I’ve learned one thing from buying advertising it’s that this business is all about referrals.

An amazing number of actors who shoot with me are returning clients, people who like and trust me enough to come back when it’s time to update their headshots. These are the same people who talk about what a great experience they had with me, and the positive impact my pictures have had on their relationships with casting. Together with agents, acting teachers and other supporters, these people are the engine of my business.

I really appreciate referrals, but I’d like to make my appreciation a little more concrete: for every client that comes my way because of your good word, I’ll give you a $10 credit towards a regular session.

If you’re a returning client, 10 referrals over 2 years would mean $150 off the regular session price with the returning client discount.

If you’re not a client yet but plan to shoot with me in the future, start referring your friends now and you could rack up a significant discount by the time you’re ready to book your session.

Just make sure the person you refer lets me know. I’ll keep a running tally against your name. It’s as easy as that.
